Who'd have thought it!

If someone had bet me before the election that (a) we'd end up with fewer MPs than last time; (b) but get more votes; and (c) Nick Clegg would be Deputy Prime Minister and Chris Huhne would be in the Cabinet, I'd have declined odds of 1000-1. So would you!

I returned to the constituency early last week so I could visit the new retirement village at Grove Place. Everyone was very welcoming and I was very impressed with the facilities. It was particularly interesting for me to see how the transition from Atherley School to retirement complex had been achieved. I had tea with the residents and they had obviously done a lot of research too.

Last Friday I attended the opening of Benham Campus at the Southampton Science Park in Chilworth. The science park is linked to the university and I think it is one of our local success stories which we don't promote enough. The latest buildings are state of the art and built to a very high environmental spec and hopefully, despite the recession, they will all soon be occupied.

Every year there is a ballot at Westminster and a lucky handful of MPs are given the chance to bring forward a Private Member's Bill. For MPs who are not likely to become Ministers this is probably the only chance they will have to bring forward legislation that they can really set their mark upon.
